Ruth Tompson nasceu em Portland, em 1910, mas mudou-se para Los Angeles com a família em 1918. Nesta mesma época, ela foi uma das contaminadas com pandemia da Gripe Espanhola, mas sobreviveu.
Em Los Angeles, Ruth era vizinha de Robert Disney, tio de Walt Disney, que a convidou para conhecer os estúdios do sobrinho. Em 1937 Walt Disney lhe ofereceu um emprego como uma das animadoras de seu primeiro longa-metragem, Branca de Neve e os Sete Anões (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1937), onde ela trabalhou como colorista.
Ruth também trabalhou em Pinóquio (Pinocchio, 1940), Fantasia (Idem, 1941), Dumbo (Idem, 1941), A Bela Adormecida (Sleeping Beauty, 1959), Mary Poppins (Idem, 1964), Os Aristogatas (The Aristocats, 1970), Robin Hood (Idem, 1973) e Bernardo e Bianca (The Rescuers, 1977). Ela também animou desenhos do Mickey, Pateta, Pato Donald e Ursinho Pooh, e durante a Segunda Guerra Mundial tornou-se uma das primeiras operadoras de câmera em Hollywood.
Na década de 1960 ela deixou brevemente a Disney para trabalhar como animadora dos desenhos do Marinheiro Popeye, mas voltou para Disney, onde trabalhou até o final da década de 1970. Em 1978, após trabalhar no longa O Senhor dos Anéis (Lord of Rings, 1978), ela se aposentou.
Ruth Tompson morava em uma casa de repouso destinado a artistas e profissionais cinematográficos aposentados, e morreu enquanto dormia.
